Baosteel’s joint venture Baoyin Steel Tube Corp (Baoyin) will supply its initial output of nuclear tubes to a local nuclear project, Steel Business Briefing learns from a company official. The company began producing nuclear tubes in October this year.
Baoyin’s first batch of products will be supplied for the No.1 unit of the $4bn Guangxi Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant project in south-western China, the official says. But he refuses to disclose the contracted tonnage. The No.1 unit is scheduled to begin operation in 2015, SBB notes. Baoyin is one of only four makers of steam generator tubes (Inconel 690 U-shaped tubes) in the world for nuclear power plants. The plant was commissioned in December 2009 with an initial capacity of 750 tonnes/year. Baoyin received its nuclear tube production license from Beijing in August this year. The delivery to Fangchenggang will be completed by January 2011, according to a Baosteel release. The Ushaped tubes is a key component used on a "nuclear island", where steam is produced in the steam generator using nuclear power generated from a reactor, SBB notes. Baoyin is a joint venture formed in 2006 between Baosteel, Jiangsu Yinhuan Precision Tube (Yinhuan) and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGN). Baoyin, CGN and CGN's nuclear equipment suppliers signed an initial contract in July to supply steam generator tubes for three of CGN’s nuclear power units.
