Mexico has initiated a review to potentially extend a compensatory quota on imports of hot-rolled steel originating from Russia and Ukraine originally implemented in March 2000. This is according to a document from the Mexican authorities monitored by Kallanish.
The country’s Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) announced on 26 March that Mexican companies Altos Hornos de México (Ahmsa) and Ternium Mexico complained that the removal of duties would negatively impact domestic production.
The compensatory quota was first imposed in 28 March 2000 at 30.31% for imports of hot-rolled steel for all Russian companies, as well as at 46.66% for HRC entries from Ukraine. These were extended in 2006, 2011 and 2016.
The products under investigation are classified under HS codes 7208.10.99, 7208.26.01, 7208.27.01, 7208.38.01, 7208.39.01, 7225.30.04, 7225.30.05, 7225.40.03 and 7225.40.04.
The Mexican Secretariat of Economy (SE) determined that the period of investigation should be from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019 as announced in the DOF.
Anti-dumping measures will remain in effect during the on-going review.
