AISI: Steel Import Permits Surged 12%

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported notable surge in steel import permits during the month of December 2019. The AISI’s report is based on the latest Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data published by the Commerce Department.

As per data, the Dec ’19 steel import permit applications totalled 2.308 million net tons during the month. This is significantly higher by 12.3% from the permits which had totalled 2.055 million net tons in November 2019. Also, it was higher by approximately 48% from the 1.561 million net tons of final imports in November last year.

The import permits for finished steel surged higher by 4% from November final imports of 1.331 million net tons to 1.388 million net tons in December last year.

The import permit for hot rolled sheets increased the most, surging higher by 38% when compared with Nov ’19 final imports. The import permits of tin free steel too were up significantly by 37%. The product that recorded significant increase in the full year 2019 was black plate, which was up by 110% in comparison with 2018.

The full year 2019 total steel imports at 28.660 million net tons were down by 15% from 2018. The finished steel imports too were down by 17.9% to total 21.082 million net tons.
