World crude steel production went up by 2.8% year on year in February to 143.3 million mt) in the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), it said Monday.
China's crude steel production went up by 5% in February to 74.8 million mt, taking Asian production up 4.5% on the year to102 million mt. India produced 9.6 million mt of crude steel, up 1.5%. Japan produced 7.9 million mt, up 2.2% on February 2019.
Europe last month registered a fall in output of 9% to 12.28 million mt. The largest European steel producer, Germany, registered a drop of 12% to 2.9 million mt of crude steel, while the second largest steel producer, Italy, produced 2.0 million mt, up 0.1%. France produced 1.2 million mt, a 1.3% decrease.
In North America last month production went down by 1.3% year on year to 9.6 million mt. Mexico registered the largest drop of 19.3% to 1.3 million mt. The US produced 7.2 million mt, an increase of 3.0%.
South American production was down by 0.9% year on year to 3.4 million mt. Brazil's crude steel production in February was 2.7 million mt, down 1.3%.
Turkey's crude steel production for February 2020 was 2.9 million mt, up 8.2%.
In the Commonwealth of Independent States, production was up just 0.1% year on year at 8 million mt. Crude steel production in Ukraine was 1.7 million mt, up 1.2% from February 2019.
In Africa production was down by 4.1% to 1.2 million mt, while Middle East production was up by 22.9% at 3.6 million mt.
