China’s finished steel export and its export to ASEAN-6 in 2019

General: Export to ASEAN ââ

Total finished steel export in China declined 7.2% y-o-y to 62.2 million tonnes in 2019. Export to ASEAN-6 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) dropped 13% y-o-y to 18.6 million tonnes in the same period.

China’s export of long steel products continued to decline. Section export in China declined 4% y-o-y to 2.5 million tonnes. Nearly a million tonnes of which was the export to ASEAN, and the volume dropped 8% y-o-y. China’s section export to Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore registered double digit increasing rates. Export to Vietnam registered 54% y-o-y to 163,000 tonnes. Export to Indonesia surged 27% y-o-y to 153,000 tonnes and export to Singapore rose 23.5% y-o-y to 136,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, export to Malaysia dropped by 100,000 tonnes to 229,000 tonnes. Export to Philippines also dipped by nearly 100,000 tonnes to 280,000 tonnes during the same period. Export to Thailand was not significant and the volume declined to 16,723 tonnes.

Bars – Export to ASEAN âââ, Vietnam ááááá, Thailand ââââ, Other ASEAN âââââ

China’s export of bar shrank by nearly 2 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes in 2019. A million tonnes of the bar export was sent to ASEAN-6 countries, which was half of the volume compared to the export in 2018. The largest destinations for China’s bar export were Vietnam and Thailand, at 275,000 tonnes each. The volume to Vietnam increased 43% y-o-y while the volume to Thailand was a decline of 40% y-o-y. China’s bar export to other countries in ASEAN-6 registered double digit declining rates of around 40-80% each.

Wire Rod: Export to ASEAN ââ, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia ââ, Philippines ââââ

China’s export of wire rod declined by more than a million tonnes to 4.3 million tonnes in 2019 and half of the volume was sent to ASEAN-6 countries. The export to all ASEAN-6 countries registered negative growth rates. Thailand was the largest exporting destination for China’s wire rod in the region, at 657,000 tonnes and the volume declined 12% y-o-y, followed by the export to Vietnam, at 437,000 tonnes, a decline of 14% y-o-y in 2019. The export to Indonesia dropped 13% y-o-y to 410,000 tonnes in the same period. Export to Philippines slackened by half to 377,000 tonnes and export to Malaysia, at 158,000 tonnes was a decline of 10% y-o-y, the least declining rate in the region.

Plates: Export to ASEAN á, Thailand ááááá Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia á

China’s export of plates, on other hand, showed a slight increase of 3% y-o-y to 5 million tonnes in 2019. Plates export from China to ASEAN-6 registered a moderate increase of 4% y-o-y to 3 million tonnes. China’s export of plates to many countries in ASEAN-6 registered positive signs. The largest destination remained Vietnam and the export volume picked up to an increase of 10% y-o-y to 1.05 million tonnes in 2019. Plates export from China to Thailand surged by 100,000 tonnes to 183,000 tonnes in the same period, followed by the export to Singapore and Indonesia, at 134,000 tonnes and 119,00 tonnes respectively. The export to Philippines and Malaysia, on the other hand, registered negative growth rates of 31% y-o-y and 44% y-o-y to 258,000 tonnes and 84,000 tonnes respectively.

Hot Rolled Coils: Export to ASEAN ââ, Vietnam ââââ, Indonesia, Thailand á,

Export of hot rolled coil from China reduced 18.4% y-o-y to 9.2 million tonnes in 2019 and the export to ASEAN-6 decreased 1.4 million tonnes to 3 million tonnes in 2019. More than 60% out of China’s HRC export to ASEAN went to Vietnam. However, the volume declined 38% y-o-y to 2 million tonnes. Export to other countries, such as Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore also showed negative growth rates while export to Indonesia and Thailand showed positive signs.

Cold Rolled Coils: Export to ASEAN â, Vietnam ââ, Indonesia áá, Philippines âââ

Total export of cold rolled coil from China dropped by 400,000 tonnes to 5.2 million tonnes in 2019. Export to ASEAN-6 countries dropped by 200,000 tonnes to 1.26 million tonnes in the same period. Among ASEAN-6 countries, Vietnam and Indonesia were the largest destinations of China’s cold rolled coil export. The export to Vietnam dropped 18% y-o-y to 342,000 tonnes while export to Indonesia increased around 40,000 tonnes to 337,000 tonnes in 2019. China’s cold rolled coil export to Philippines dropped by 100,000 tonnes to 263,000 tonnes, followed by the export of 159,000 tonnes to Malaysia.

Coated Sheets: Export to ASEAN á, Thailand ááá, Philippines, Vietnam á, Malaysia, Singapore â

China’s coated sheet export, nevertheless, showed a slight increase of 3% y-o-y to 19 million tonnes in 2019. Export of hot dipped galvanized sheet stagnated at 8.9 million tonnes, followed by the export of color coated sheet of 6.6 million tonnes, an increase of 10% y-o-y in the same period.

China’s coated sheet export registered significant volumes in each of ASEAN-6 countries. Export to Thailand, at 1.9 million tonnes was an increase of 25% y-o-y, followed by the export of 1.3 million tonnes to Philippines, an increase of 4.6% y-o-y in 2019. China’s export of coated sheet to Vietnam registered a slight increase of 2% y-o-y to 1.2 million tonnes, followed by the export to Indonesia, at 930,000 tonnes or an increase of 28% y-o-y. Export to Malaysia and Singapore, on other hand, registered negative growth rates of 1.4% y-o-y and 6.4% y-o-y to 280,000 tonnes and 170,000 tonnes respectively.

Pipes & Tubes: Export to ASEAN â, Philippines ââ, Indonesia ááá, Malaysia âââ

Pipe and tubes export increased slightly, by 2.7% y-o-y to 8.3 million tonnes in 2019. Both seamless pipes export and welded pipes export showed positive signs. China’s export of pipes & tubes to ASEAN-6 dropped slightly, by 1% y-o-y to 1.5 million tonnes in the same period. Philippines was the largest destination among ASEAN-6. The export volume, however, declined by a double digit rate of 18% y-o-y to 365,000 tonnes in 2019. Export to Indonesia, at 319,000 tonnes, was an increase of 26% y-o-y during the same period. Export to Singapore and Thailand registered positive moderate growth rates of 1-2% y-o-y to 218,000 tonnes and 216,000 tonnes respectively. Meanwhile, export to Malaysia declined 29% y-o-y to 139,000 tonnes in 2019.
