Nippon Steel’s operating blast furnaces reduced to 11 units due to excess capacity

Japan’s Nippon Steel Corporation suspended the operation of the No. 1 blast furnace at Setouchi Works in Kure, Hiroshima on September 29.

The No. 2 blast furnace at its Kure steelworks and the No. 1 blast furnace at Kansai Works in Wakayama, which were temporarily suspended last year, were also changed to permanently closed at the end of last month.

Therefore, the current operating blast furnaces owned by Nippon Steel total 11 units. The blast furnace shutdown was to reduce excess capacity due to the decreased demand for steel in Japan’s domestic market.
