Iranian crude steel production rose 10% on-year in the 11 months through 19 February to 25 million tonnes, according to an Iranian Steel Producers’ Association (ISPA) report published on its online Chilan portal.
Billet output accounted for 15.3mt and slab production was 9.6mt.
Finished steel output in the period rose 5% to 18.35mt. Long products output grew 6% to 9.2mt, of which rebar accounted for 7.5mt. Flat products output increased 5% to over 9mt. Hot rolled flats production increased 3% to 7.5mt, while cold rolled coil production rose 2% to 2.4mt and coated sheet output grew 24% to 1.57mt.
ISPA singled out as “…remarkable” the equal growth rate between crude steel and direct reduced iron production this year, which has led to a DRI shortage in recent months.
According to the latest ISPA export data for the ten months through 20 January, Iranian semi-finished products exports surged 47% on-year to 5.82mt and finished steel shipments rose 25% to 2.98mt (see Kallanish passim). Despite the shortage, DRI exports rose 76% to 886,000t. Iron ore pellet exports grew 19% to 2.42mt.
