US’ scrap exports exceed 2 million tons for first time in 8 years

According to statistics from the US International Trade Commission (USITC), the US, the largest scrap exporter in the world, exported around 2.03 million tons of scrap in May this year, exceeding 2 million tons for the first time in eight years. The export volume has risen for four months in a row, by 24.5% month on month, and it also hiked greatly by 41.6% year on year.

Among the US’ scrap exports in May, the exports to Mexico accounted for the largest proportion, totaling 332,000 tons, a year-on-year surge of 153.2%; followed by Turkey’s 285,000 tons, a decrease of 4.7%. Vietnam ranked third with 280,000 tons, soaring by 376.1% year on year.

In the first five months of this year, the US totally exported roughly 7.79 million tons of scrap, rising by 11% over the same period a year earlier.
