London-based Anglo American expects manganese exports from its Samancor joint venture in Australia to resume and progressively increase by June, Kallanish reports.
Exports were halted following tropical cyclone damage in March 2024 and were expected to resume in March 2025. The operations remain under temporary suspension, although some activities have already resumed.
Anglo holds a 40% share in the Samancor joint venture with South32, which owns the Groote Eylandt mine – the largest manganese mine in the world.
During 2024, operational recovery at the facility focused on re-establishing critical services and undertaking a substantial de-watering programme, which enabled a phased return to mining activities in June 2024. “These activities have enabled the operation to build up sufficient stockpiles and finished goods, resulting in the wash plant being paused for most of this quarter,” Anglo explains.
The miner said Thursday its manganese ore production share from Samancor dropped 60% to 317,000 t. Samancor’s total sales volume, meanwhile, declined by 66% in Q1 to 271,500 t, compared to 796,800 t a year earlier.
The performance was mainly attributed to the ongoing temporary suspension of the Australian operations, although it includes manganese ore production and sale from South African operations. Anglo, however, did not provide figures by country.
