Hyundai unveils Indonesian hydrogen demonstration project

South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Group says it will build its first overseas hydrogen initiative in Indonesia, featuring production and refuelling operations, Kallanish reports.

The plan unveiled Tuesday is based on low-carbon hydrogen production using biogas from the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung, in West Java province. Construction of the plant, which will feature Hyundai Rotem’s steam methane reformer, could start this year after a positive technical feasibility study.

Yet, details on potential production capacity will only be available once the study is completed.

The fuel will then feed an on-site hydrogen refuelling station to support fuel cell electric vehicles in the region. Hyundai has partnered with Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina to use its existing compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure. The aim is to start refuelling operations by 2027.

“The project in Indonesia is especially meaningful as it marks the first case of expanding the resource-circulating hydrogen production demonstration project, which has been successfully carried out in Korea, to an overseas market,” comments Jaeha Park, vice president and head of global hydrogen business at Hyundai Motor Group. “Through our hydrogen business brand HTWO, we hope to collaborate with the Indonesian government and companies to expand hydrogen production and further accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society.”

Without further elaboration, Hyundai notes that its partnership with Pertamina covers land provision for refuelling stations, hydrogen production and transport, and vehicle utilisation.

The carmaker operates three factories in the country producing cars and batteries, with investment plants amounting to $3 billion.
