Tesla China said Monday it will release its full self-driving service in the country only when it receives regulatory approval, Kallanish learns.
“All parties are actively advancing the relevant process and we will push it to you as soon as it is ready,” the company wrote on social media Weibo, in response to comments under Tesla China vice president Grace Tao’s Weibo account.
Last week, the group announced that it would launch a free trial of its full self driving (FSD) in China sometime between mid-March and mid-April. However, this has been paused, raising criticism among car owners, Kallanish notes.
The carmaker started uploading a FSD assisted driving function for its Chinese users in February. The software update would enable level 2 autonomous driving capability, not the level 4 fully driverless function being promised by the Texas-based company.
Tesla offers a 30-day supervised FSD trial in the US, where its artificial intelligence is trained using local data. The feature is provided by downloading a software version on Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles.
The company cannot train its AI in China due to data laws and is rumoured to be partnering with tech giant Baidu to improve the performance of autonomous driving development. As of February, companies in the Asian country need to obtain regulatory approval to issue software upgrades for autonomous driving.
