More iron and steel producers in Tangshan, the major steelmaking hub in North China's Hebei province, have been ordered to suspend or cut their operations starting from March 4, as city authorities intend to strengthen regulatory measures in response to poor air quality in the coming days, Mysteel Global learned from sources.
A five-day air-quality forecast posted on the website of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) on March 4 indicated that Tangshan will experience mild to moderate atmospheric pollution over the next five days, just after the city has recovered from heavy air pollution three days earlier, Mysteel noted.
To prevent the air quality from deteriorating, four pelletizing plants and 77 hot-rolled coil (HRC) producers in Tangshan will halt their production from March 4 until March 12, in line with the shutdown of local re-rollers during the same period, as reported.
Meanwhile, integrated steelmakers in the city are poised to idle their blast furnaces for maintenance during March 7-11, as part of the efforts to reduce carbon emission. Most of these mills are expected to cut their operating production capacity by around 30%, Mysteel has learned.
