Port Talbot steelworks transformation: Tata's EAF plan moving forward

The transformation of Port Talbot's steel industry is moving ahead as Tata Steel UK advances with plans for a £1.25 billion electric arc furnace (EAF).

The new facility will be constructed at the existing steelworks site, specifically where the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant currently stands. The EAF is expected to begin operations by late 2027.

This development followed significant changes at the site, including the closure of Port Talbot's last blast furnace in September 2024. The shutdown marked the end of traditional steelmaking in the town and impacted over 2,800 jobs.

The workforce reduction has been substantial, with approximately 2,500 employees expected to depart by March 2025, many of whom had already left their positions by the end of 2024.
