BYD to trial 60-Ah all-solid-state batteries on cars in 2027

Chinese automaker BYD has launched the development of 60-ampere-hour (Ah) all-solid-state batteries, with plans to demonstrate on vehicles around 2027, Kallanish Power Materials reports.

Sun Huajun, chief technology officer at BYD’s lithium battery company, revealed plans to commercialise all-solid-state batteries at the China All-solid-state Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum on 15 February.

The “scaled demonstration” of the technology will be first done in high-end models. The executive says the deployment of all-solid-state batteries in mainstream and entry-level EVs will take “some time.”

The first demonstration phase will cover around 1,000 cars. At a later official launch, BYD expects to ramp up coverage to 40,000 vehicles, targeting 120,000 cars in 2033. .

“From the perspective of long-term development, after calculation and scale-up, solid and liquid batteries can be close to share the same price,” he says, without elaborating. “In theory, liquid ternary batteries and solid ternary batteries can be priced the same.”

All-solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte to conduct ions between the electrodes, instead of the liquid or gel polymer electrolytes used in batteries mass deployed today. These batteries are deemed to be safer and have higher energy density than conventional batteries. However, manufacturing them at scale remains a major challenge.
