Tesla held a commissioning ceremony on Tuesday for its energy storage battery factory in the Lingang Area of Shanghai, known as Megafactory, Kallanish learns.
The facility, the first of its kind by Tesla outside of the US, will produce the company’s Megapack energy storage batteries. Initial production capacity is estimated at 10,000 units, which is the equivalent of around 40 gigawatt-hours.
Trial production started last month. Full production is scheduled to be reached by the end of March.
“We are committed to integrating energy products with electric vehicles to achieve our vision of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” Mike Snyder, Tesla’s vice-president of energy and charging, says during the ceremony. “Today, we celebrate the launch of the Shanghai Megafactory, which will ramp up production this quarter and help Tesla expand into more markets.”
Commenting on the inauguration, Lingang’s local government says: “This marks the official entry of Tesla’s business in China into a new stage.”
Megapack is a containerised solution with a maximum weight of 38 tonnes, which can store over 3,900 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
