Peru launches AD investigation on Chinese wire rod

The Peruvian National Institute for the Defence of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) has launched an anti-dumping investigation into imports of Chinese wire rod.

According to the petitioner, domestic producer Aceros Arequipa (AA), these imports significantly harm the local industry.

“Our preliminary analysis reveals that imports of wire rod from China surged by 136.2% between 2021 and 2024, entering the Peruvian market at significantly lower prices than the average production costs of AA,” states Indecopi in a note published in the Official Gazette El Peruano and monitored by Kallanish.

According to the agency, the influx of Chinese wire rod has led to an 18.3% reduction in domestic prices, which has adverse effects on the local economy. These include a decline in sales, financial losses and workforce reductions, which impact the overall stability of the Peruvian steel industry.

The investigation covers the period between July 2021 and June 2024. It targets low-carbon steel wire rod classified under HS chapter 7217 with diameters between 5.5 mm and 16 mm.
