Port Hedland's iron ore shipments fall in December

Iron ore shipments from Port Hedland in Western Australia fell year-on-year and month-on-month in December, Kallanish notes. 

According to Pilbara Ports Authority data, the port shipped 47.61 million tonnes of iron ore in December, falling 4.55% from 49.88mt a year ago, and 2.34% from 48.76mt the previous month. 

The port's iron ore shipments to China, the largest export market, stood at 41.76mt, down 2.73% y-o-y but up 4.49% m-o-m.

Meanwhile, the port exported 2.8mt of iron ore to South Korea in December, falling 18.88% y-o-y and 44.89% m-o-m.

Shipments to Japan from the port totalled 1.46mt, declining 5.88% y-o-y but rising 0.79% m-o-m.

Port Hedland, the dominant iron ore export hub in Western Australia, handles iron ore shipments for Australian major miners including BHP, Fortescue Metals and Roy Hill.
