India considers KIOCL-NMDC merger

The Indian steel ministry is exploring a merger between state-run KIOCL (Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited) and NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation), a government official disclosed on Monday, notes Kallanish.

NMDC, one of India’s largest iron ore producers, has a production capacity of approximately 50 million tonnes/year.

The company is a major player in the mining and production of iron ore, serving both domestic and international markets.

KIOCL is an iron ore pellet producer with a capacity of 3.5mt.

The merger aims to boost efficiency, with NMDC planning to use KIOCL's pellet facilities to boost iron ore pellet exports, the official adds.

NMDC can use KIOCL’s pellet-making facilities to turn iron ore into high-quality pellets, which are in high demand both in India and abroad.

This move will help NMDC export pellet more efficiently by taking advantage of KIOCL’s existing infrastructure and experience in handling exports.
