Hoa Phat commissions 300t converter

Vietnam's Hoa Phat Steel Group has commissioned its No.1 300-tonne converter at the second-phase expansion of its Dung Quat steel complex.

This phase of the expansion includes the installation of two 2,500-cubic-meter blast furnaces, two 300-t converters, and additional supporting infrastructure. Installation work on the blast furnaces began in August 2023, with the project scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2025.

Upon completion, the expansion is set to double the complex's crude steel production capacity, adding an additional 5.6 million tonnes per year, Kallanish notes. The two new blast furnaces alone will contribute approximately 2.5-2.8mt/y of hot metal capacity.

The Dung Quat plant of Hoa Phat Group is the second hot-rolled coil producer in Vietnam, following Formosa Ha Tinh. It has become a key supplier, with an important role in regional price setting. Phase two could face more fierce regional competition, however, with a number of companies looking at expanding into HRC, including Eastern Steel and Megasteel in Malaysia, and Krakatau in Indonesia.
