Oman is eyeing enhanced cooperation with Belgian partners across the green hydrogen value chain, including in production, transportation and utilisation, Kallanish Power Materials reports.
During Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to Belgium, an MOU was signed between state entity Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) and trade body Belgian Hydrogen Council (BHC). The agreement seeks to explore pathways to broader cooperation with other European countries, particularly by addressing legislative challenges.
The parties intend to align policies, promote knowledge exchange and technical advancements, as well as explore new opportunities for research and development.
“Oman’s potential capacity as a hub for green hydrogen production, combined with Belgium’s role as a promising hydrogen-based industrial hub and strategic connection point to European markets, will strengthen energy security and create a seamless hydrogen supply chain,” explains Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Omani minerals minister.
“Together, we aim to accelerate the world’s transition to clean energy by fostering innovation and building the infrastructure needed to connect producers and markets worldwide,” adds Al Aufi, who is also the chairman of Hydrom.
The countries are already involved in hydrogen development through the Hyport Duqm project to be developed by Oman’s OQ Alternative Energy and Belgium’s DEME. The integrated project may export around 1 million tonnes/year of green ammonia once fully operational. Last year, the governments also agreed to advance hydrogen certification and trade frameworks.
