India-based ACME Group plans to commission the first phase of a green ammonia project in Oman by the end of 2026, with deliveries to start thereafter, Kallanish Power Materials learns.
The facility currently under construction in Duqm will have an initial production capacity of 300 tonnes/day. In Phase 2, production will increase to 1,200 t/d, resulting in a total production capacity of 0.9 million tonnes/year.
The green hydrogen derivative will be supplied to various interested parties, through an offtake agreement with Yara. ACME will also provide green hydrogen from one of its facilities to feed iron reduction operations, also in Duqm.
“By integrating renewable electricity and green hydrogen into the iron production process, we aim to redefine industry benchmarks for sustainability, efficiency, and innovation,” comments ACME chairman Manoj Kumar Upadhyay.
With other projects in the US and India, the group aims to produce 4.5m t/y of green ammonia. The chemical is deemed a great hydrogen carrier due to its energy density and existing storage and transport infrastructure. Once imported, ammonia can be converted back into hydrogen for different applications.
