Singapore utility Senoko Energy eyes a 20-year hydrogen supply deal with Malaysia’s clean energy solutions provider Gentari, Kallanish Power Materials reports.
The companies announced on Wednesday an MOU to explore the potential import of hydrogen from Malaysia to Singapore, starting in 2029.
Senoko plans to use the fuel for power generation in its existing and new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) assets to enhance efficiency and environmental performance. It aims to reduce 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year through the partnership in the first phase. However, Senoko has not specified whether the plants would be run entirely on hydrogen nor when it could reach a definitive deal with Gentari.
“Hydrogen has the potential to play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions, and so together, we are taking a bold step towards creating a more sustainable energy landscape and low-carbon future,” comments Frederik Baerts, president and ceo of Senoko Energy.
Michèle Azalbert, Gentari’s chief hydrogen officer believes the partnership with Senoko is a “key step” in developing a Southeast Asian hydrogen backbone. “Cross-border infrastructure like this pipeline connects production and demand centres as we accelerate green hydrogen adoption across the region,” Azalbert explains.
For Gentari, the agreement would cement the company’s position as a leading supplier of green molecules. The Malaysian firm aims to become a large-scale hydrogen producer and industry partner for hard-to-abate sectors such as industry, chemicals, maritime and aviation.
Last year, it inked a joint feasibility study agreement with Singapore’s gas utility provider City Energy to study building a pipeline to import hydrogen from Malaysia to Singapore. In partnership with SEDC Energy, Gentari is also developing a hydrogen production hub in Sarawak, Malaysia.
