Hynamics, ESB to develop green hydrogen plant in Wales

EDF subsidiary Hynamics and Ireland’s state-owned electricity company ESB have signed an agreement to develop a green hydrogen plant at the Port of Barry, Wales, Kallanish learns.

Under an MOU, the companies plan to formalise contractual agreements for the joint development of the so-called Barry hydrogen project by year-end, with an aim to secure the required financing.

The plan is to produce and supply green hydrogen for the “decarbonisation of industrial operations” around the Port of Barry. However, few details of the project have been disclosed.

Kallanish Power Materials has approached the companies for comment.

“We believe that green hydrogen will play a pivotal role in achieving net zero, and this MOU with Hynamics comes at an exciting time in the UK’s acceleration towards a decarbonised energy system,” comments Aodhán McAleer, hydrogen, storage & power to X manager, ESB.

Pierre de Raphélis-Soissan, ceo of Hynamics UK, adds: “This collaboration represents a significant advancement in our commitment to decarbonise industry. Together, we will leverage our complementary strengths to drive impactful results and create sustainable value for our customers and communities in the Barry Port region.”

The announcement comes roughly a year after Hynamics announced a partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP) – which owns the Port of Barry – to explore the production of low-carbon hydrogen at the port. At the time, ABP said the partnership would explore opportunities to use low-carbon hydrogen to replace natural gas used in industrial production processes, as well as explore hydrogen’s use in port operations and transport.
