Italy’s Arvedi AST closes electric arc furnace on technical failure earlier than schedule

On September 19, Acciai Speciali Terni (Arvedi AST), a stainless steel manufacturer in Italy, closed one of two electric arc furnaces at its Terni plant late last week due to a technical failure of the walking beam system. The company started the inspection immediately to find out the cause and resolved the problem on Saturday night (September 21).

In early September, Arvedi AST announced a shutdown of one of the two electric arc furnaces at the steelworks for a week at the end of September due to the persistence of high energy costs which made the company lack competitiveness with the growing imports from Asia at rock-bottom prices.

The shutdown of the electric arc furnace due to a technical malfunction was earlier than the scheduled closure at the end of this month.
