Feralpi Group selected Danieli Service to upgrade its six-line continuous casting machine in Lonato, Italy, which produces 200 tph of 150x150-mm billets.
The project consisted of the installation of a tundish exchange system called ‘fly-tundish’ on a non-Danieli machine. The newly performed tundish-change time was 6 minutes and 42 seconds, 14 seconds better than the target time.
The scope of supply included the engineering, mechanical, electrical, and automation components, assembly and startup assistance services, and on-site training.
The intervention was carried out during a 6-week Summer shutdown, replacing the tundish installed on the corresponding car with a new tundish installed on a second car, without re-stranding the machine.
The tundish car consists of a structure with two transfer paths on the casting floor, one installed on the side of the casting machine and the other positioned on the side of the tundish.
A transfer device allows the transfer of the tundish car in a housing station, while simultaneously positioning another tundish car in casting position.
The system is also designed for emergency operations in case of liquid-steel leaks on the casting floor.
