Indonesia has seen the start-up of a new hot rolled coil producer. PT Lautan Baja Indonesia recently commenced HRC production at Banten, western Java, Kallanish learns.
The company began operating a 1.5 million tonnes/year hot strip mill in mid-August. It is producing HRC of 1.5-18mm thickness and 900-1,250mm width by rolling slab. “They are aiming to supply the HRC to the domestic market,” a Jakarta trader says.
There are also plans for upstream and downstream production on the 100-hectare plant site. The company is wholly owned by PT Lautan Steel Indonesia, which plans to invest IDR 7 trillion ($500m) in the project to install a 75t EAF and 90t ladle refining furnace. It will produce slab of 210-230mm thickness and 900-1,250mm width, as well as cold rolled and coated steel products. Lautan envisages an eventual rated output of 3m t/y of finished flat products.
PT Lautan Steel Indonesia is an existing producer of induction furnace rebar as well as H-beams and wide-flanged beam products, and is also operating at the same site in Tangerang at Banten.
Another HRC producer, New Asia International, commenced production earlier this year (see Kallanish passim). It is operating a 1.5m t/y capacity mill at Sidoarjo in eastern Java. It also plans to later produce CRC and coated steel products. New Asia is 50% owned by Indonesia’s PT Java Pacific Indonesia, 40.5% by Xinya Metal Products and 9.5% by Tianjin Zhongzhong Technology Engineering Co.
