thyssenkrupp & BlueScope Steel cooperate for low-carbon steel production

thyssenkrupp is cooperating with BlueScope Steel to scale up its research activities for carbon-neutral steel production, with a focus on the smelting units, which is the replacement of the first blast furnace with a direct reduction (DR) plant with downstream smelters.

thyssenkrupp is building two smelters, each electrically operated and with a capacity of 100 MW, to process 2.5 million tons of directly reduced iron into hot metal every year.

One of the aims of the four-year research collaboration with BlueScope Steel is to deepen understanding of the process and optimize plant management ahead of the commissioning of the smelter. These include topics such as electrode management, furnace drive modes, process parameters, refractory materials, and maintenance.
