Tsingshan, Jindal break ground on Indonesian stainless JV

Chinese stainless steel giant Tsingshan Group and Indian stainless steel leader Jindal Stainless (JSL) have marked a major milestone with the groundbreaking of their stainless steel joint venture in Indonesia.

The new plant, named PT Glory Metal Indonesia (GMI), will be situated in the Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) and is set to produce 1.2 million tonnes/year of stainless steel, Kallanish notes.

The joint venture involves an investment of $180 million, which will fund the installation of equipment including two 150-tonne Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) converters, a 150t ladle furnace, a Rotary Kiln-Electric-Furnace (RKEF), and a 1,600mm continuous caster.

Scheduled to commence operations in November 2025, the plant will use ferronickel sourced from local producers in the IMIP region, optimising heat recovery and production efficiency.
