Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. (Baosteel), a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group, has successfully applied its self-manufacturednew-type steel casings in an offshore oil and gas drilling project, which marks a breakthrough for Chinese steelmakers to develop and produce such advanced casings for high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) ultra deepwater wells domestically, the Shanghai-listed company stated in a public release on July 30.
The steelmaker began developing the BGT3-HT high-torque sealed casing in early 2022. The new casings have now been deployed in the Bohai Sea gas field in northeast China and have already resulted in the successful production of high-yield oil and gas streams on site. Its application is expected to significantly support the exploration and development of large oil and gas resources in China's deep-sea areas.
Baosteel's innovation has overcome major technical barriers in the casing industry, addressing the significant extraction challenges in East China's extensive gas fields, which can exceed depths of 6,000 meters. These conditions demand casings with exceptional anti-corrosion properties, sealing integrity, and high torque resistance.
Historically, the development of such high-performance casings has been dominated by overseas companies due to the stringent quality and stability requirements in offshore operations.
In well construction, a series of casing strings are typically used, where an outer, larger-diameter seamless steel casing provides structural integrity and protection for the inner, smaller-diameter production tubing, Mysteel Global notes.
