Risun: Indonesia to become top met coke exporter

Coking firm China Risun Group foresees Indonesia becoming the top metallurgical coke exporter in the world from 2025 with more than 10 million tonnes/year of coke shipments.  The group's deputy general manager, Jiao Yong, said at the Asia Coke event in Singapore this week, attended by Kallanish, that Indonesia is changing the balance of global metallurgical coke in 2024 and 2025, as its coke exports are set increase from less than 1m t/y currently.  According to him, from 2025, the world's metallurgical coke export volume will be significantly affected by Indonesia, and China and Indonesia typically sell to the same markets. He notes that Japan would also be largely affected by Indonesian coke, as they use similar coking coal resources, and have similar international markets.

However, he opines that Poland, Colombia, and US metallurgical coke exports will not be significantly affected by Indonesia. According to Jiao, Indonesia will be the second-largest metallurgical coke exporter in 2024 with an export volume of about 8mt, behind only China.  He says Indonesia used to be a net importer of coke before 2023, but because of the new coking capacities in Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), the country has become one of the leading coke exporters in the world.  He notes that in 2024, IMIP's coke capacity will reach 11.2m t/y, including Risun Weishan (3.2m t/y), Detian (2.8m t/y), Kingrui (2.6m t/y) and Kingxiang (2.6m t/y).
