Indonesia, Chinese carmakers ink EV boost deal

Indonesia’s industry ministry has recently reached agreements with Chinese automakers Neta, Wuling, Chery, and Soko. The aim is to turn the country into an EV export hub as the carmakers ramp up domestic production, Kallanish reports.

Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita says in a statement that the Indonesian government has set a target of producing 600,000 EVs by 2030. “The companies have also agreed to make Indonesia a base for manufacturing right-hand drive EVs for export to 54 countries,” the official adds.

Further details of the agreements, such as incentive policies, have not been disclosed.

The ministry’s release stated that Neta Auto Manufacturing Indonesia targets an increase in its domestic component level (TKDN) to 60% by 2025 with an annual sales target of 10,000 units.

On its social media, Neta Auto said: “In the future, Neta Auto will work with the Indonesian government to advance Indonesia to a production centre for new energy vehicles, aiming for global exports.”

SAIC Wuling also signed the agreement. The carmaker’s MiniEV was adopted by the Indonesian Embassy in China, but other Wuling all-electric models are also becoming popular in Indonesia.

Chery Auto, on the other hand, is researching the potential of introducing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to the Southeast Asian country. Sokonindo is also committed to boosting its sales in Indonesia.

In addition to the new agreements, Indonesia has also attracted investment from Chinese leading EV companies BYD and GAC Aion for EV plants. They are targeting production of 100,000 and 150,000 units/year, respectively.
