Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-tech is progressing plans to build its first gigafactory with Slovak battery start-up InoBat, through their GIB joint venture.
The JV led by Gotion announced Thursday an undisclosed investment agreement with the Slovak government. Construction of the gigafactory in the Šurany Battery Hub is set to start at the end of 2024.
Under the agreement inked with Slovakia, the plant will start commercial operations in 2026 with a 20 gigawatt-hour production capacity. Phase 1 will cover an area of over 100 hectares and employ 1,000 workers, GIB says. Once fully operational, capacity will reach 60 GWh, Kallanish notes.
Li Zhen, chairman of Gotion High-tech, sees the project as a milestone in Gotion’s globalisation strategy.
“Adhering to the principle of ‘In Slovakia, for Slovakia,’ and with the robust backing of the Slovak government, we are striving to develop the project into the most advanced zero-carbon battery factory in the EMEA region, assisting Šurany in becoming a crucial hub for batteries and new energy industries in Europe and contributing Gotion’s strength to global energy transformation,” Zhen adds.
