Tokyo Steel to resume HRC production at Tahara

Tokyo Steel aims to restart its Tahara steel plant next week, Kallanish notes.

The Japanese steel company suspended operations at its Tahara steelworks located in Chūbu after an explosion at the plant on 25 May. The loss of hot rolled coil production incurred from the stoppage of operations is estimated at around 60,000t. The accident caused damage to auxiliary equipment although its 420t electric arc furnace was unaffected (see Kallanish passim).

In line with the restart, Tokyo Steel raised its domestic scrap procurement H2 grade scrap prices at Tahara and Nagoya Scrap Yard by JPY 1,500/t ($9.5) to JPY 51,000t and JPY 50,000/t respectively, effective 18 June. Previously, the company had reduced its H2 purchase prices by JPY 2,000/t effective 28 May for Tahara and Nagoya.

Tokyo Steel’s overall HRC production is about 140,000-150,000t/month.
