Baosteel GOES capacity rises to 1.16 mln t/y with new line

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co (Baosteel), the listed arm of the world's largest steelmaker China Baowu Steel Group, announced that its specialized production line for grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) entered full operation on June 13, Mysteel Global learned from the company's official release.

GOES is a special type of steel used primarily in electromagnetic applications, such as transformer cores, generators, and large electric motors, playing a crucial role in the green development of the energy and electricity industries, Mysteel Global notes.

The production line, part of the steel major's GOES product optimization project Phase II launched on December 23 2022, mainly produces high-quality GOES products with a thickness of no more than 0.2 mm, according to the release.

With the new production line in operation, Baosteel's annual GOES production capacity has risen from 1 million tonnes to 1.16 million tonnes, reinforcing its position as a global leader in this field. Notably, the proportion of thin specifications (0.27mm and below) has reached 75%, significantly optimizing its GOES product mix.

Besides, the project has boasted several technical breakthroughs, such as building the world's fastest and most energy-efficient annealing units with multiple innovative technologies including hydrogen recycling.

To further enhance its electrical steel production capabilities, Baosteel has also embarked on a green manufacturing demonstration project for ultra-high-grade electrical steel products. This project aims to establish a production line exclusively for thin specification electrical steel, targeting an annual capacity of 220,000 tonnes of GOES products upon completion.

Thin electrical steel is mainly used in energy-efficient transformers because it can reduce no-load loss and noise, contributing to a more low-carbon and environmentally friendly solution, as per the release.
