The New South Wales (NSW) state government in Australia has approved a major refurbishment of BlueScope's 60-year-old plate mill, aiming to boost production, invigorate the economy, and create new jobs. This project will enhance production capacity at Port Kembla, increasing output from 430,000 to 600,000 tons annually to meet growing demand in the construction, renewable energy, and defense sectors.
The upgrade includes energy-efficient furnace replacements, infrastructure improvements, and modernizing processing equipment, significantly reducing environmental impact.
This State Significant Development approval supports NSW's Net Zero by 2050 target by enabling BlueScope to produce high-quality steel plates for the renewable energy sector. The refurbishment, starting in July 2024 and spanning three years, represents the most comprehensive upgrade since the mill's establishment in 1963.
