China on track to get ICVs on road

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), together with Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and Ministry of Transport, on Tuesday approved nine entity groups consisting of car makers and main users as the first batch to join the pilot program for the admission and on-road operation of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs).

The groups that have been confirmed for the pilot program include Changan Auto, BYD, GAC Group, SAIC Motor, FAW Group, BAIC BluePark Magna Automobile, SAIC Hongyan Automobile, Yutong Bus and NIO, according to MIIT's release.

The pilot program will be carried out in five stages: pilot application, product access trial, road access trial, pilot suspension and exit and evaluation and adjustment, Mysteel Global has learned.

The four ministries will systematically advance the implementation of the pilot program in accordance with the overall requirements and objectives. Based on the empirical evidence gathered from the pilot, they will accumulate management experience to support the revision and development of relevant laws, regulations and technical standards, according to MIIT.

"This will accelerate the establishment and improvement of the production access and road traffic safety management systems for ICVs, thereby promoting the high-quality development of China's intelligent connected new energy vehicle industry," MIIT stated.

MIIT also emphasized that currently, only the selection phase for pilot applications has been completed, and this does not mean that ICVs with autonomous driving capabilities have been granted access permits or are allowed to operate on the roads.
