The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan has forced five Japanese automakers to suspend shipments of models involved in fraudulent practices, according to a release given on Monday.
In light of the fraudulent cases at Daihatsu and other companies, MLIT previously asked 85 auto manufacturers and other companies to investigate and report on whether or not they had engaged in fraudulent activities in type approval applications.
The main deceptive behaviours include falsification of crash tests and false statements in the test results for some parts such as braking system of some previously produced vehicles. Toyota even submitted false data in pedestrian protection tests for three current models.
As a result, Toyota, Mazda, Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki had been found guilty by the end of May, Kallanish notes. They have 7, 5, 3, 22, and 1 models of vehicle involved, respectively. The ministry did not specify the specific models affected.
Within all 85 companies, investigations are still ongoing in 17 companies. Another 16 companies report no fraudulent activities so far.
