Meranti Green Steel has reserved the site for its Thai direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace (DRI-EAF) steelworks in the IRPC industrial estate in Rayong. It plans to commission the steelworks in 2027, Kallanish notes.
The DRI plant in this project will initially use natural gas, and will feed an EAF, continuous caster, and hot strip mill with 2.5 million tonnes/year capacity (see Kallanish passim). In addition to this captive DRI plant, this company will ship hot-briquetted iron feedstock from its joint venture in Western Australia.
This DRI plant will begin to consume green hydrogen when available. The plant will use only renewable energy through a virtual power purchase agreement.
Meranti has been working with Danieli to refine the plant layout and for engineering development at their IRPC site in past months ahead of detailed planning. It has also launched cooperation with IRPC, BIG, GPSC, and other site partners.
