Tesla to recall nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks over accelerator fault

Tesla will recall 3,878 of its Cybertruck models due to risks related to vehicle speed control, according to the US’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle (NHTSA).

A recall note seen by Kallanish states the accelerator pedal pad may dislodge and become trapped by the interior trim. This can “cause the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash,” it adds.

The US electric vehicle manufacturer will repair or replace the accelerator pedal, free of charge. The 2024 Cybertrucks being recalled were manufactured between 13 November 2023 and 4 April 2024.

According to the NHTSA, the first customer notified Tesla about the issue on 31 March. After that, another complaint was received, and a number of tests were conducted. Tesla decided to voluntarily recall the affected vehicles on 12 April.

Tesla started deliveries of the all-electric futuristic pickup trucks late last year, after a two-year delay due to production problems and battery supply issues.

In January, the company notified the agency about a recall related to an electrical system issue affecting Cybertrucks and other Tesla models. Warning lights with a smaller font size were making critical safety information on the panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash. An over-the-air (OTA) software update was released to remedy the issue in over 2.19 million vehicles.

A Tesla whistleblower, Cristina Balan, told the BBC earlier this week that she had raised concerns over a design flaw potentially causing the carpet to trap some pedals. The former engineer says she was fired after reaching out directly to Tesla’s ceo Elon Musk.

Tesla has not commented on the recall nor the whistleblower claims.
