ASI calls for scrap export ban from Australia

The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has submitted a proposal to the Australian Senate to ban exports of unprocessed steel scrap from Australia.

The waste reduction and recycling policies are set to fully optimise waste and the circular economy in the country, as steel scrap is a sovereign and increasingly scarce and valuable resource, ASI says in a note seen by Kallanish. Unprocessed steel scrap includes car parts and white goods contaminated with plastics and other products already banned from export, the document mentions.

"Without a ban, Australian steel mills will fall short of being able to fully service the growing Australian construction and manufacturing sectors," ASI observes. "Australia would be forced to continue to import higher volumes of steel scrap, adding to emissions through the transport process and damaging the local industry whilst potentially making it uneconomic."

Information released by the Australian Parliament shows that the inquiry has been accepted and will be reported by 22 November 2024.
