The cross-border hydrogen network mosaHyc project has reached a final investment decision, allowing partners to start the administrative permitting phase, Kallanish learns.
The roughly 90-kilometre pipeline project will connect the Greater Eastern region of France to Germany’s Saarland and the border with Luxembourg. It is designed to transport renewable and low-carbon hydrogen to industrial customers in Germany.
The first client will be the Saarland-based steelmaking site in Dilligen operated by Stahl Holding Saar Group. Deliveries are set to start in 2027.
According to Engie Group, the €100 million ($106.4m) FID now clear the way for the construction and network conversion phase. The French energy firm says its subsidiary GRTgaz, in charge of managing the French section of the project, will invest €40m in mosaHyc. It will convert around 45 km of gas pipelines in the Moselle region.
“The mosaHYc project has a strategic value as the first Franco-German link, paving the way for the development of a wider European hydrogen network,” comments Cécile Prévieu, Engie vice president in charge of networks activities. “This project will accelerate the development of a renewable, low-carbon hydrogen market in Europe. It also contributes to our goal of 700 km of hydrogen-dedicated transport networks by 2030.”
