South Korean Hyundai Steel is currently considering building an electric furnace steel plant in the US to cope with the high tariff barriers and meet low emission requirements. The carbon emissions per ton of electric furnace steel are 80% lower than those of the blast furnace converter process, and the construction cost is lower.
Electric furnaces mainly use scrap steel for smelting, which contains many harmful impurities and can’t meet the requirements for producing high-quality steel like automotive using plates. Therefore, POSCO and Hyundai Steel are seeking to solve this problem by mixing blast furnace molten iron and scrap steel.
