Chinese shipbuilders received new ship orders totaling 15.2 million deadweight tons (DWT) over January-February, jumping by 64.4% on year, according to the latest data released by the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) via its official WeChat account on Thursday morning.
Within the new orders, 90.7% were for export, the release said. The total value of Chinese ships exported over January-February stood at $6.79 billion, CANSI noted.
By the end of February, the order backlog held by Chinese shipyards also posted a 31.3% on-year rise to reach 149.19 million DWT, of which 91.8% were for export, the CANSI data showed.
Meanwhile, the country's shipbuilders completed vessels surged by 95.4% on year to be equivalent to 8.26 million DWT during this year's first two months, with 92.5% of the tonnage for export.
The latest CANSI data also showed that China's top 10 shipbuilding firms took up 73.3% of the total completed vessels nationwide during the first two months.
By region, shipbuilders in East China's Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Northeast China's Liaoning together contributed to 91.9% of the country's total completed vessels over January-February.
Besides, bulk carriers were the largest segment in both the completed vessels and new ship orders during the first two months, with their respective shares at 51.3% and 40.1%, according to CANSI.
Over January-February, Chinese shipyards saw their new orders, completed vessels and order backlog in terms of DWT account for 69.5%, 56.5% and 56.1% respectively of the world's total, the CANSI data showed.
