Nio, Gotion High-tech may collaborate in battery swapping

Chinese automaker Nio and battery giant Gotion High-tech recently conducted a discussion on potential collaboration on battery swapping and platform sharing, Kallanish learns.

On 23 March, Nio’s ceo Li Bin and other company representatives visited Gotion High-tech and held discussions with Gotion’s chairman Li Zhen and technology executives. Nio’s chief highlighted the companies, which are based in Anhui Province, share common attributes.

“First, both companies pay huge attention to research and development, and have achieved significant advantages in technology development. Second, both share a global perspective,” he explains.

Li Zhen added: “Based on the unique advantages in technology, cost and globalisation, Gotion will form a project team to coordinate with Nio comprehensively. We look forward to achieving substantial outcomes through cooperation and jointly promoting the technology innovations and industrial development of the new energy industry.”

Specific details, however, have not been provided. Yet, some analysts believe Nio’s new brand Onvo, which will be officially launched in May, is likely to adopt Gotion’s batteries. The new mid-tier brand will focus on family-use SUVs and reportedly compete with the Tesla Model Y.

Earlier this month, Nio announced a deal signed with Zhongan Energy, a joint venture of Anhui Province Energy Group (31.5%), Wuhan Nio Power (19.25%), Gotion High-tech (19.25%) and other companies. Nio and Zhongan Energy will promote the construction of 1,000 energy storage and battery swapping integrated stations, an open energy network and a highly efficient battery asset management and operations system.
