Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel, a subsidiary of Baoshan Iron & Steel Co based in South China's Guangdong province, has recently received environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval from local authorities for its zero-carbon high-grade steel sheet plant project, Mysteel Global learned.
Initially unveiled in late December 2022, the project has now passed the public comment period on the EIA report over March 4-11, and no objections have been raised so far, meaning that the authorities will issue official approval for the project later, Mysteel Global notes.
With a total investment of about Yuan 5.2 billion ($723 million) and a designed steel capacity of 1.8 million tonnes/year, the project will construct both steelmaking facilities and port berths at the company's steelworks in Zhanjiang, according to the public release.
Specifically, a 220-t electric-arc furnace, a 220-t ladle refining furnace, a 220-t RH facility, a 2,150-mm continuous slab caster, a direct reduced iron conveying system and a steel slag processing and production line, a 10,000-t break-bulk berth as well as supporting facilities will be built.
This new project marks a further step for Baosteel towards its decarbonization targets and aligns with the ambitious roadmap of its parent company China Baowu Steel Group - the world's top steelmaker - to reach carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050, Mysteel Global understands.
Previously in December last year, Baosteel Zhanjiang achieved a milestone in advancing Baowu's roadmap with the operation of China's first hydrogen-based shaft furnace boosting a steel capacity of 1 million t/y, as reported.
