CATARC sees growth opportunities in China's EV battery recycling management

China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC) says the development of the EV battery recycling management industry has accelerated in China, Kallanish learns.

According to Song Hu, senior engineer at the Clean Energy Research Department Resource Construction Section of CATARC Data, in the next decade, China’s power battery recycling will reduce carbon emissions by nearly 10 million tonnes/year.

“At the end of 2023, the cumulative output of NEV in China had exceeded 25.84m units. Last year, the production of NEVs in China increased by 35.8% year-on-year, and the market penetration rate exceeded 31.6%. By the end of 2023, the cumulative assembly of traction batteries for NEVs in China had exceeded 1,103.7 gigawatt-hours,” Hu said during the 9th Battery Summit in Tokyo, Japan.

However, he suggests some changes will be needed to deliver further growth. Citing established policies and mechanisms in battery recycling, including the material flow of the traction battery recycling industry, Hu says that the existing management policy is tight and encrypted. Instead, he calls for opening communication protocols and data sharing.

“Automobile production enterprises should inform the vehicle owners of the requirements and procedures for recycling and disposal in a timely manner through on-board information systems or aftersales service channels, and submit the health information of traction batteries, such as battery code, state of certified energy (SOCE), and offline monitoring time,” the engineer suggests.
