Magnetite Mines registers interest on South Australian DRI

Australian miner Magnetite Mines will register its Expression of Interest with the South Australian government as a supply chain partner for the development of a hydrogen-based direct reduction iron (DRI) plant in South Australia, Kallanish notes. The government has said it is beginning to seek partners for such a project (see separate article).

Magnetite Mines says in a statement that the company will seek to align industry partners for the formation of a Green Iron Hub at Port Pirie, to be supplied with magnetite concentrates from its flagship Razorback iron ore project.

The company, whose focus is on the development of magnetite iron ore resources in South Australia’s Braemar Iron Province, is seeking to produce premium ‘DR-grade’ iron ore concentrates at Razorback.

The firm is progressing the development at Razorback of a high-value, long-life operation with an initial 5 million tonnes/year operation, expandable to 10m t/y, in response to the global steel industry’s requirements for both increased production and lower carbon emissions.

According to its chief executive officer Tim Dobson, the development of a reliable supply of premium-grade magnetite concentrates is the essential first step to creating a green iron and steelmaking industry in South Australia.

“It is this opportunity that is driving Magnetite Mines’ plans to produce DR-grade iron ore concentrates just 240km from Adelaide, with the potential to export from the Upper Spencer Gulf both domestically and internationally and in doing so support the rapid transition to green iron and steel production," he adds.
