Vale to join Spanish greenfield low-emission steelmaking project

Brazilian miner Vale and Spain’s Hydnum Steel have signed a memorandum of understanding on developing low-emissions solutions for steelmaking, Kallanish notes.

The companies will jointly evaluate the possibility of building an iron ore briquette plant within Hydnum Steel's greenfield low-emission steelmaking project in Puertollano, in the Castilla-La Mancha region.

"This MoU reinforces our confidence in hydrogen usage to enable steelmaking decarbonisation. The project is another important step towards our target of reducing our scope 3 emissions by 15% [by] 2035,” comments Vale’s director of product and business development, Rogério Nogueira.

Hydnum Steel's plant is designed to use fossil-free energy throughout the manufacturing process and will gradually incorporate green hydrogen into the production process to substantially reduce CO2 emissions.

The plant is expected to be operational in 2026 with an initial output of 1.5 million tonnes/year of automotive strip products, which will be expanded to 2.5mt/y starting in 2030.

The project is valued at €1.65 billion ($1.77 billion) and will create more than 1,000 direct jobs.
