Tata Steel Netherlands restarts No.6 blast furnace

Tata Steel Netherlands resumed the operation of the No.6 blast furnace at its IJmuiden steelworks on January 31, 2024.

This blast furnace has been idled since early April last year due to maintenance and force majeure, and the resumption was postponed several times owing to technical problems. The unit is now gradually increasing production of pig iron.

The IJmuiden steelworks, with two blast furnaces, have an annual production capacity of pig iron of six million tons, and the No.6 blast furnace can produce 2.5 million tons of pig iron per year.

The total yearly steel production at Tata Steel IJmuiden is around 7.5 million tons. The main products include hot-rolled steel, cold-rolled steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, painted coils, and tinned products.
