POSCO commissions Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking Development Center at Pohang Works

South Korean steel producer POSCO announced that its Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking Development Center at Pohang Works has been opened. It is expected to be an important place in constructing test facilities.

HyREX (Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking) is a proprietary process developed by POSCO. The technology uses hydrogen as a reduction agent to produce iron from iron oxide, which will replace the company’s way of making steel with blast furnaces.

The Hydrogen Reduction Steelmaking Development Center plans to finish the HyREX test facility with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons by 2027 to prove the commercial viability of HyREX technology.
